Welcome From the Dean

Thank you for considering the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business at Westminster College. I am proud to work with so many dedicated and experienced professionals who are focused on one primary goal: learning and success in the world of business. We aim to achieve this by focusing on excellence in teaching and academic scholarship, but also by providing our students with real-world expertise and experience that ensures our programs are current and relevant to your needs. Our professors are deeply committed to their students, and they all spend time providing individualized advising and personal attention. We foster corporate partnerships throughout the mountain west so that our students can hit the ground running with real-world, practical projects and assignments they can immediately put to work. Our Centers for Financial Analysis, Entrepreneurship, and Innovative Cultures, as well as our newly redesigned undergraduate and graduate curricula that allow students to customize their education to match their own personal needs, provide a rich learning environment for students with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Our college-wide learning goals ensure that every graduate has the skills necessary to be not just good students and employees, but well-rounded citizens and members of society.

From Our Program

Derrick Fan, Business AlumnusIf I am given the opportunity to relive my college decision moment, I would choose to attend Westminster again. At first, quite honestly, I was skeptical of attending a small liberal arts college in Utah. However, one semester in, I realized Westminster is the right place for me. Here are a few things I absolutely love about the college:

  1. The Gore School of Business – A well-connected, hidden gem of a business school. Not to mention all the interesting professors and wonderful administrators I have met and gotten to know on an intimate level.
  2. The Honors program – A program that consists of seven team-taught, mind-bogglingly interesting, and intellectually stimulating seminars.
  3. The People – When the college says you will meet and connect with genuine and brilliant people, it is serious about it.”

Derrick Fan, Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business Alumnus

In summer 2014, Derrick interned with Goldman Sachs’ Salt Lake City office. This summer, he will be interning with D.A. Davidson & Co.’s IIG Research in Seattle. He will be starting a Masters in Finance at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain after the 11-week internship.

Nancy Panos Schmitt, Associate Professor, Marketing

As a teacher, I am aware of the responsibility I have to students. I take that responsibility very seriously. My role as a teacher makes it vital for me to engage students for exploration and learning. This role entails involving students both within and outside the classroom.

I strive to engage my students intellectually to allow them to first examine, then question and ultimately apply the ideas and theories presented. This convergence of theory and application builds the foundation for marketing knowledge. This intellectual curiosity and vitality is important for students while they are at Westminster, as well as after they leave.

The future success of my students has always been a strong driver in my academic career. I make demands of myself to be enthusiastic, prepared, current, curious, creative and intellectually honest. I bring these characteristics to class with me every day. I love teaching marketing in the BVGSB.
