Diversity Lecture Series

The Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture Series at Westminster College is sponsored by the B. W. Bastian Foundation. The Foundation, established in 1996 by Bruce Bastian, strives to build community and understanding by supporting local and national institutions. Financial support is directed to educational outreach, cultural and HIV/AIDS programs. A strong commitment is placed on programs and organizations that benefit, encourage, and preserve the rights of individuals and promote equality for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community.    

All presentations start at 7:30 pm in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall, located in the Jewett Center for Performing Arts on the Westminster College campus.

Immigrants’ Lives, Immigration Laws and Reflections for Reform

Cecilia Menjívar is the Cowden Distinguished Professor in the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. Her research falls at the intersection of macrostructural forces and micro-level processes and has focused on immigration to the United States and on violence in Latin America. With respect to the first, she has researched the effects of immigration laws at the federal, state, and local levels on different aspects of immigrants’ lives, focusing on family dynamics, the workplace, and schools, with attention to family separations, educational aspirations, religious participation, identity, and belonging, as well as on work and experiences in the labor force. Menjívar’s publications include the award-winning books, Fragmented Ties: Salvadoran Immigrant Networks in America (University of California Press, 2000); Enduring Violence: Ladina Women’s Everyday Lives in Guatemala (University of California Press, 2011); and she just completed an edited volume with Daniel Kanstroom titled, Constructing Illegality in America: Immigrant Experiences Critiques, and Responses, to be published by Cambridge University Press in late 2013.

Promoting and Developing a Strong and Diverse Nursing Workforce

Dr. Beverly Malone is the CEO of the National League for Nursing (NLN), the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. Dr. Malone began her nursing career with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1970. She combined clinical practice with further academic study, first earning a master’s in psychiatric nursing and in 1981, a doctorate in clinical psychology. Dr. Malone’s dynamic career has encompassed public policy, education, administration, and clinical practice and has included positions as surgical staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, director of nursing, and assistant administrator of nursing. Her impact on nursing and nursing education since becoming, in February 2007, CEO of the NLN, the nation’s leading voice for nurse educators, has already been enormous and visible. She has quickly moved to put increasing racial, ethnic, and gender diversity among clinical practitioners and faculty on the NLN’s front burner, in accordance with NLN and other research that proves the importance to health care outcomes of narrowing the cultural gap between caregivers and their patients.

Bearing Witness to the Challenges and Opportunities for Mothers in Academia

Dr. Mari Castañeda is Associate Professor and Director of Diversity Advancement, in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst. Dr. Castañeda studies new media and telecommunication policy, Latina and ethnic media studies, and transcultural political economy of communication industries. Her work promotes "engaged scholarship" and aims to address inequality, power, community voices, and the role of intersectionalities in shaping media and cultural spaces. Her recent publications include two co-edited books, Mothers in Academia. (Columbia University Press, 2013) with Kirsten Isgro, and Soap Operas and Telenovelas in the Digital Age: Global Industries and New Audiences with Diana I. Rios (Peter Lang Publishers, 2011).

“The Night Overall Wasn’t Bad”: What College Students Really Think About Hooking Up 

Dr. Lisa Wade, Associate Professor of Sociology, Occidental College, holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an MA in human sexuality from New York University. Dr. Wade has published extensively on US discourse about female genital cutting, hook-up culture on college campuses, and the social significance of the body. She is also the founder and editor of the popular blog, Sociological Images and appears frequently in print, radio, and television news and opinion outlets.

Sex/Body/Self: A Performance and Talk

Internationally-acclaimed solo performer Tim Miller will perform excerpts from his work and speak about the role performance plays in constellating identity. Known for his charged performance work which takes up the most challenging social texts of our time, Miller will share fierce and funny performance material as well as speak about how performance can be used to embolden communities, challenge injustice and connect people with one another. He is the author of the books Shirts & Skin, Body Blows, and 1001 Beds. His theater works have been published in the play collections O Solo Homo: The New Queer Performance (1998) and Sharing the Delirium: Second Generation AIDS Plays and Performances (1993). Miller has taught performance in the theater departments at UCLA, Cal State LA, and New York University. He is a founder of Performance Space 122 in New York and Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, California.   

All presentations are open to the public at no charge and will be followed by opportunities for audience members to ask questions.
