Grandma's Home Enhances a Family Legacy

Westminster College occupies a special place in the hearts of the Schow family. Glorya Schow was a Westminster nursing professor for six years, between 1973 and ‘79. Her son, Shawn, is a 1981 graduate of the college, and granddaughter, April, graduated in spring of 2004. Glorya credits her grandparents for instilling the importance of education in their family. Immigrants from Norway and Mexico, they stressed to their children the value of studying hard to live a successful life full of meaningful opportunities. Each child passed this value on to their children…thus the legacy grew and thrived.

Helping others is another important value for the Schow family. “To those that much has been given, much should be returned,” is one of Glorya’s favorite quotes. She has taught her children the importance of contributing to others. Together they established the Paez-Garcia-Schow Scholarship after the death of Glorya’s mother as a way to honor her values while making a Westminster education possible for others. The family encouraged memorial gifts to the scholarship, in lieu of flowers, at the time of Glorya’s mother’s funeral. And Shawn’s employer, 3M, matched his contribution to the scholarship. “I was a scholarship recipient,” Shawn said, “so it felt good to give back.”

When it came time to sell Grandma’s home, the family had an idea – why not give the house to Westminster College? The donation of Grandma’s home on South Washington Street further funded the scholarship in her memory while bypassing costly capital gains taxes. The transaction was simple. The Schows gave the house to Westminster, the college sold the property, and the proceeds funded the Paez-Garcia-Schow Scholarship in perpetuity. In addition, each member of the family realized a tax deduction for their gift of real property.

Glorya and her children receive tremendous pleasure from attending the annual scholarship luncheon and meeting the recipients of their family’s scholarship. “Creating this scholarship enhanced our lives,” said Glorya. “To sit and talk with these young people is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.”
