About Sheng Xiao
Ph.D. in Economics (Vanderbilt). Dr. Xiao has published papers in Journal of International Money and Finance, European Journal of Finance, Economics Letters, Emerging Markets Review, China Economic Review (all these journals are indexed by Thomson Reuters Social Science Citation Index--SSCI) and several Chinese academic journals. He has also written a chapter on venture capital investments in a book published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2013. One of his working papers has been named the "Best Paper of 2014 Academy of Management Annual Meeting" and the abridged version of the paper is forthcoming in the 2014 Academy of Management Annual Meeting Best Paper Proceedings. Dr. Xiao is the recipient of the "Excellence in Scholarship Award 2013-2014" of Bill & Vieve Gore School of Business at Westminster College. Dr. Xiao is a program committee member of the Financial Management Association (FMA) Annual Meeting 2014. He served as a session chair for FMA Annual Meeting 2013 and Paris Financial Management Conference 2013. Dr. Xiao is an active member of American Economic Association, American Finance Association, Academy of Management, Financial Management Association International, and European Financial Management Association.
Dr. Xiao's current research on corporate governance in China is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It is a collaborative research project with scholars from China, UK and USA, and Dr. Xiao is a Co-Principal-Investigator of this project. One of his working papers on corporate governance in the US was a semi-finalist for the Best Paper Award for Financial Management Association Annual Meeting 2013. His research has been featured in the front page of Agenda, a Financial Times publication subscribed by 96% of the largest 100 companies in the US.
Dr. Xiao has been invited to present research papers at conferences or seminars in Atlanta, Chicago, Nashville, Philadelphia, Newark (Delaware), Sydney (Australia), London and Durham (UK), Paris (France), Copenhagen (Denmark), Rome (Italy), Hong Kong, Taipei, and various cities in mainland China. He has been a referee for papers submitted to Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of International Money and Finance, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Applied Economics, Journal of Productivity Analysis, China Economic Review, Journal of Business Ethics, International Review of Economics and Finance, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, Explorations in Economic History, etc.
Dr. Xiao has teaching experiences at Vanderbilt University, Furman University, University of Minnesota (Morris Campus) and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (in Chengdu, China). He was selected to participate in American Economic Association's Teaching Innovation Program in 2007. He has taught Financial Management, Investments and Portfolio Analysis, Econometrics, Economics of China, Economics of Asia, etc. He teaches MBA courses on data analysis (MBA 610), simulation and modelling (MBA 623), business valuation (MBA 631) and advanced managerial finance (MBA 691), as well as undergraduate economics and management classes such as Business Quantitative Methods (MGMT 230) at Westminster College.
Dr. Xiao co-led Gore Business School's Graduate Business Program International Context Tour to China in fall 2014. This tour included visits to Digital China, Zhongguancun National Exhibition Center and Guanghua Management School of Peking University in Beijing, PriceWaterhouseCooper and Education First in Shanghai, and Rio Tinto in Suzhou. This tour included a visit to Angel Women and Children's Hospital in Chengdu, as well as an entrepreneurship symposium at Sichuan University in Chengdu, where about 40 local corporate executives from healthcare, finance and other industries gave presentations and participated in discussions. Dr. Xiao was Director of Furman University's Study Abroad in China Program in 2007, and Faculty Coordinator of University of Minnesota (Morris Campus)'s Joint Program with Shanghai University of Finance and Economics between 2009 and 2013.
Dr. Xiao's hobbies include music, travel, swimming and reading. Dr. Xiao is passionate about charity programs. He is a regular contributing member of A Life A Time Foundation. He hopes that more and more people will participate in charity programs to make the world a better place.
