MediaSpace - Kaltura Video Portal

What is MediaSpace and Kaltura?

MediaSpace is a video portal where faculty, staff, and students can upload videos and share them in an appropriate way. It can be thought of as being like our very own "YouTube".

Kaltura is the company that created MediaSpace and handles the hosting of the videos on their servers. Westminster pays to use these products.

Why not use Youtube, Viddler or Vimeo?

One of the challenges of using a site like Youtube for accademic content is privacy and copyright. For example, we might have a guest lecturer who could come to campus and give a speech which she might be willing to share with our campus community, but would not like the world to see on YouTube. MediaSpace allows us the chance to post the video online, but protect it by keeping it behind the Westminster login system. This way, only Westminster community members see the videos.

Another example of its use is a professor who decides to make a video that she would like to share with her class. Posting this video on YouTube would cause it to be available to the world, but at the same time, would make it difficult for anybody to find.

Mediaspace gives us an easy way to keep track of videos at Westminster so that students and faculty can easily share content with each other, while still keeping it protected from unwanted access.

Warning

Our license for MediaSpace allows for a certain amount of file storage space and viewing bandwidth. Our IS staff can track usage and will occasionally analyze how MediaSpace is being used. Rarely, a video might not be appropriate for storage on MediaSpace and the individual who posted the video will be contacted and assisted in moving the video to a more appropriate location.

How to use MediaSpace

 

Using MediaSpace to post a video is easy and can be sumarized into 4 steps:

  1. Create a video file and prepare it to be uploaded. MediaSpace accepts most major file formats including .mov, .avi, .wmv, .mp4, .m4v, and .flv)
  2. Login to the Westminster MediaSpace site: http://mediaspace.westminstercollege.edu
  3. Upload your video by clicking on the link in the top right corner link called "Upload Media". Click the "Browse" button and find your video file to be uploaded. Click the "Upload!" button to begin uploading and wait for it to finish. Click "Next" and fill in the information you are prompted to fill in. Faculty: pay attention to the "Not Published" check box. If this is unchecked then the file can be searched and found by Westminster Community members (not the entire world). If the "Not Published" box is checked then the file can only be shared with others by getting the embed code or finding the URL for the video and sharing it with others. Click "Done" after selecting filling in all of the fields.
  4. Share the video. There are many places and ways to share videos. For example, a video can be posted to a website like this wiki, ANGEL, or PowerPoint 2010. To share the video, click on the video in the "My Media" area. Scroll to below the video player and click on the "Get Embed Code" link. Copy the code that comes up.  This code is in HTML format, so when you paste it, be sure that you are in "HTML Edit" mode.

By logging into MediaSpace you agree to the following:

All materials posted in MediaSpace are legally available to be posted online without violating copyright law.

All materials submitted are subject to review and can be removed without prior notice. Content that is considered inappropriate will be removed.
Examples of inappropriate content include but is not limited to:

  • Illegal materials
  • Offensive, pornographic, or hateful
  • Claiming others work as your own
  • Obscene, offensive, or slanderous material;
  • Commercial purposes unless authorized by the college.
  • Items that unnecessarily overload MediaSpace system.

All material must follow the "Responsible Use of Westminster Computing and Network Resources" policy:

  • Appropriate and responsible use of the Westminster computing and network resources is defined as ?use that is consistent with the teaching, learning, research, and administrative objectives of the college.?
  • None of these policies are meant to inhibit academic pursuits or academic freedom. As long as the activity is a legitimate academic pursuit, not illegal, is not clearly and expressly prohibited, and does not damage computing and network resources, this policy does not prohibit the academic activity.
  • Users of the Westminster computing and network resources accept the following specific responsibilities:
    • To not create, display or transmit threatening, racist, sexist, obscene, abusive, or harassing Westminster College Information Technology Security Policy language or materials. Westminster college is committed to being a racially, ethnically, and religiously heterogeneous community.
    • To uphold local, state, or federal laws; copyright laws; or institutional rules.
    • To use only authorized computer accounts and passwords.
    • To not use email or other electronic communications technologies to harass or threaten others; for promotional, profit-making purposes; or to break into or read others? email or electronic correspondence without their permission.
    • To respect the integrity of the computing and network resources by not doing intentional damage to hardware, software, security devices or code, or through the creation of viruses, worms, Trojans or other forms of electronic mayhem.
    • To not seek unauthorized access to computers at other locations.
    • To not use the computing and network resources in a way that inhibits the normal academic and administrative activities of the college.
