HPW 300O - Intro To Backcountry Skiing
This field-based course is designed to give students with some previous avalanche awareness training the opportunity to apply these skills in backcountry terrain. Students enrolling in this course should understand the basic concepts of backcountry skiing or splitboarding, and will continue to develop their skills and knowledge of the sport. Topics covered will include selecting appropriate terrain, reading weather and snowpack history, managing groups in avalanche terrain, demonstrating strong leadership skills, using avalanche safety gear, and practicing rescues. This course will also include two classroom sessions to brief/debrief backcountry experiences, review avalanche-related topics, and discuss reading and writing assignments. 1 Skills-based Credit Hour

HPW 240 - Indoor Rock Climbing
Students will develop the skills and knowledge required to safely enjoy the sport of indoor climbing. Bouldering and roped climbing will be experienced as students learn about safety, body movement, conditioning, equipment, teamwork, and themselves. 1 Credit Hour

HPW 245 - Advanced Rock Climbing
This course is designed for students with previous climbing experience who are interested in learning advanced climbing skills. Students will engage in bouldering and roped climbing, including lead climbing; the primary objective of the class is for students to significantly improve their level of climbing and understand advanced techniques. Through their development as climbers, students will learn about safety, body movement, conditioning, equipment, teamwork, and themselves.  1 Skills-based Credit Hour

HPW 200Q - Ladies Only Indoor Climbing
This course is designed for female students who are looking for a non-competitive, yet challenging venue to learn climbing skills. Students will engage in bouldering and roped climbing and instruction will be geared toward individual skill levels. Students will improve their level of climbing and gain an understanding of basic and advanced climbing techniques. Through their development as climbers, students will learn about safety, body movement, equipment, and teamwork. Female students of all skill levels are welcome to participate.

HPW 200P - Outdoor Rock Climbing
Students will develop the skills and knowledge required to safely enjoy the sport of outdoor climbing. Bouldering and roped climbing will be experienced as students learn about safety, body movement, conditioning, equipment, teamwork, and themselves. All skill levels welcome. 2 Skills-based Credit Hours

HPW 160 - Avalanche Awareness
This course will teach the winter enthusiast how to safely travel in avalanche territory. By combining both classroom and field training, this course will cover the guidelines specified by the American Avalanche Association for a Level I avalanche course. Topics include identifying avalanche terrain and identifying basic grain types and weak layers and strong layers. Students will perform field tests to determine snowpack stability/instability; recognize weather and terrain factors contributing to instability; perform rescue through fast and efficient transceiver use; and apply safe-travel techniques. Skills-based Credit Hours

HPW 356 - Wilderness First Responder
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses are specifically designed to meet the needs of wilderness guides, expedition leaders, and outdoor instructors. They are the outdoor education and recreation industry standard for wilderness medical training. The course is taught by the Wilderness Medicine Training Center (WMTC), one of the leaders in wilderness medicine education. WMTC is the only wilderness medicine provider to offer a complete distance learning course in wilderness medicine. The distance learning WFR course has three distinct components: a didactic distance learning component, on-line testing, and an on-site practical session. You MUST complete the didactic material--using WMTC's text, field manual, and animated DVD--and on-line testing prior to attending the on-site practical session. The time required to complete the didactic material and testing ranges from 25-50 hours depending on the individual student. The five-day, 50-hour practical session completes the course with skills labs and simulations designed to fully align the academic work with practical application. 2 Skills-based Credit Hours

HPW 300P - Wilderness Education
This is a field-based expedition-style course designed to run for the entirety of the May Term. The course will begin with a week of classroom work in preparation for the expedition. The expedition will take place in different areas of the Intermountain West and the Colorado Plateau - the field session will last approximately two weeks. The last week of the course will directly follow the field portion and will consist of debriefing, reflection, writing, and assessment. This intensive course will support the Outdoor Education and Leadership Minor by allowing students to apply, practice, and develop the outdoor, leadership, and foundational knowledge they have gained in other related courses. Course objectives: - Application of theory, research, and foundational knowledge of outdoor education and leadership in a field setting - Mastery of relevant outdoor skills such as camping, basic rock climbing, and paddling - Understanding of leadership and group dynamics on a deeper level and development of effective judgment, decision making, communication, and self-awareness through experiential opportunities Required prior courses: Outdoor Leadership and/or Outdoor Trip Leader Training; Recommended Courses: Foundations of Outdoor and Experiential Education, Outdoor Skills Courses. Priority for enrollment will be given to students taking the Outdoor Education and Leadership Minor. 4 Skills-based or Elective Credit Hours

HPW 355/ENVI 300F - Outdoor Leadership 
This outdoor leadership course is designed for students with an interest in organizing and leading outdoor trips. Topics covered include basic wilderness survival, navigation skills, route planning, hazard awareness, group dynamics, communication and leadership techniques, food rationing and outdoor cooking, emergency procedures, and Leave-No-Trace skills. Students will participate in both classroom and wilderness settings, including weekend trips to apply knowledge. 2 Elective Credit Hours

HPW 300S - Intro to Whitewater Kayaking
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of Whitewater Kayaking. By the end of the course students should be able to: Utilize good paddling technique to maneuver the kayak with a variety of strokes; develop self-rescue skills using the eskimo roll and the ability to wet-exit a capsized kayak; understand basic navigation and river hydrology, currents and features; demonstrate good route finding and execution of planned course down the river; manage risk to safely enjoy the river and objectively evaluate the hazards; become familiar with the unique qualities of the river. 1 Skills-based or Elective Credit Hour

HPW 300R - Intro to Fly Fishing
This course introduces students to the basics of fly fishing gear and tackle, basic knots for fly fishing, fly casting and fly fishing techniques and water based fishing experience. By the end of the course students will be able to: Identify, describe and assemble the different parts of a fly rod, fly reel and fly line and choose the correct equipment for the circumstances and conditions in which they will be fishing; demonstrate proficiency in the basic fly cast; tie basic fly fishing knots including: clinch knot and surgeons knot ; identify basic fly patterns including but not limited to: dry flies, nymphs, wet flies, streamers, and terrestrials; demonstrate the ability to choose the appropriate fly for the existing fishing conditions; demonstrate the techniques outlined above in a river environment. 1 Skills-based or Elective Credit Hour
