Class Notes: Misty Zellitti ('05) and Michelle Husbands ('05)
A Tale of Two Roommates
Their friendship has spanned time and distance
by Lexi Banks (’12, MACL ’15)
Michelle Husbands (’05) and Misty Zellitti (’05) were assigned as roommates in the fall of 2004, the start of a friendship that has spanned more than a decade and survived moves around the western United States. Both elementary education majors, they hit it off—except, perhaps, for a few oddities:
“The things I remember most are that her car alarm would always go off at weird times,” Michelle said. “And she kept a piece of black poster board in her window to block out the streetlight.”
Regardless, the two kept in touch after graduation. When Misty accepted a teaching position in Layton, she stayed at Michelle’s apartment for a month.
“This sparked a whole new adventure,” Misty said.
They now live in different states, as Misty accepted a job in her hometown in Colorado.
“When she called and told me, I congratulated her, told her I would have to call her back, and cried when I hung up the phone,” Michelle said.
Through their shared love of crafting, camping, and road trips, Michelle and Misty have maintained their friendship. They keep in contact almost daily through texts, phone calls, and emails. They also plan an annual girls’ trip and take frequent road trips around the country—even as far as the Calgary Stampede. As Misty quipped, “We have laughed our way across the western US.”
The duo even partnered up to make a significant change in their lifestyles, losing a combined 125 pounds. They kept each other motivated and shared their successes through the entire process.
Michelle has taught elementary school for 10 years, finished a master’s program with other teaching endorsements, and spent quite a bit of time traveling and volunteering around the world. Most recently, she met and married her husband, Dale.
Misty has taught elementary school for nine years and earned a master’s degree and Teacher Leadership Certificate. She’s married, has a baby, and volunteers extensively in her community.
