Class Notes: Annette Koehler ('07)

Teaching the Love of Learning

American educator, author, and historian Henry Brands said, “A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” Annette Koehler (’07) aims to do just that every day in her third-grade classroom at Copper Canyon Elementary School in West Jordan, Utah.

Annette has always wanted to work with children. As a student at Westminster, she considered going into pediatrics, but realized she really enjoyed helping children learn. “I find it very rewarding when students come back to see me, tell me about how they are doing, or volunteer in my class,” Annette says, crediting Westminster for guiding her teaching style.

“I had many great professors at Westminster like Carolyn Jenkins, Heidi Van Ert, and Tim Carr—to name a few. They took time to get to know me, and it’s something I do with my students now.”

After graduation, Annette got married and moved with her husband, Court, to Nebraska, where he attended law school and she taught while earning a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska. She is currently working on acquiring an administration license through Utah State University. Annette says one day she may want to be a school administrator, but for now, she loves being in the classroom.

Annette and her husband have two children of their own. She is also an avid runner, having completed four half marathons and hoping to run a full marathon soon.
