Class Notes: Jimmy Martin (MPC '06)

Feel-Good Interview of the Spring

by Kayla Bernard ('07)

We’ve all seen this movie and wish it could happen to us: a series of serendipitous encounters that lead to a star-studded career. That fateful phone call was from the editor of SLUG magazine, asking Jimmy to step in as a film critic. Next, a canceled press conference with Bill Murray leads to a chance meeting with Kerry Jackson of X96’s Radio From Hell and regular appearances on the DJ’s popular Geek Show podcast.

You’ll also recognize Jimmy’s name from his segments on the Arrow 103.5 FM and KUTV, or perhaps you’ve seen him on one of 12 panels at Comic Con. If all of that wasn’t keeping Jimmy busy enough, he is also the host of his own  film review show, Big Movie Mouth Off, that he started with the late Jeff Michael Vice in 2010.

“It sounds cliché, but networking is the greatest thing you can do for your career. Get out there and be proactive,” says Jimmy.

As a professional writer, Jimmy is often asked how he formed his writing style. He credits Westminster professor Helen Hodgson as being the primary influence on his writing today. “I took Helen’s magazine writing class, and we clicked.”

Of course, one has to ask the ultimate question: What are your favorite and most hated films of all time?

“My favorites would have to be the Back to the Future series. As for the worst movie, I despise Little Fockers, and ironically, I’ve probably seen it more than any other movie. As a fundraiser, Jeff Vice and I agreed to watch one minute of Little Fockers for every dollar raised. We watched it 12 times!”
