Class Notes: Ray Bradford ('07)

An App for Treating Acne

by Michelle Barber Lyhnakis (MPC ’06)

Ray Bradford (’07) and his team at Spruce Health are revolutionizing the way Americans see the doctor. In September 2014, Ray and his team launched a telemedicine app called Spruce, designed to take the waiting and hassle out of health care. The app is used for acne treatment, with plans to expand to treat other common medical conditions.

Users create a profile, snap a few selfies, answer questions about their skin, and submit questions they have. Within 24 hours, a board-certified dermatologist reviews the information, provides a personalized treatment plan, and sends prescriptions to the patient’s pharmacy.

Ray has worked hard at making the app bright, cheerful, and easy to use. Ray told Wired.com, “You don’t want to make it cold or too scientific.”

The Spruce iPhone app is free to download. Spruce visits are $40 and available to patients in California, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.
