First cohort of first-generation Legacy Scholars graduate
SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster College would have celebrated its Class of 2020 this Saturday at a tradition-filled commencement ceremony. While we can’t recognize our graduates’ accomplishments in-person right now, the college will honor them at an event on a to-be-determined date. Among this year’s graduates is Westminster’s first cohort of first-generation Legacy Scholars. The Legacy Scholars program began in 2016 to serve students who are the first in their family to attend college. It provides students with academic support, scholarship enrichment, faculty-to-peer mentorship and scholastic and professional preparation. Westminster was named a First-Forward institution by the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals for its commitment to first-generation student success. Since 2016, Westminster’s first-generation program has grown to include 75 students. Eleven Legacy scholars will receive degrees this year. “I am extremely proud of this first cohort of Legacy graduates. Their commitment and hard work paid off, and it is an incredible accomplishment for them and their families,” said Daniel K. Cairo Ed.D., assistant dean of students and director of Westminster’s Student Diversity and Inclusion Center. Westminster’s Class of 2020 is made up of 709 graduates from 22 countries and 30 U.S. states. Students range in age from 20 to 60 years and the top major is nursing.
