National Essay Competition: Why a Free Press Matters

SALT LAKE CITY—The McCarthey Family Foundation invites students from around the country to address why a free press matters in a national essay competition inspired by the Boston Globe’s #FreePress editorial response to President Trump’s assault on the news media.

The McCarthey Family Foundation is funding the competition in collaboration with the Boston Globe as media sponsor. The Boston Globe Foundation will award $5,000 to each winner and the overall winner will receive a full four-year scholarship to Westminster College in Salt Lake City. Essay winners must qualify for admission to Westminster College and submit a completed FAFSA application to be eligible for this scholarship. Students in grades six through eight, in grades nine through twelve, and those at universities and colleges across the country are invited to submit essays to their local newspapers examining the state of freedom of the press in the United States. Each participating newspaper will review the submissions and select its winner in each of the three grade categories. Prizes will be awarded November 7, 2020, at the McCarthey Family Foundation Lecture Series: In Praise of Independent Journalism.
