Westminster President Joins Higher Ed Leaders for Presidents Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration
January 9, 2018
Effort calls on Congress to pass legislation protecting and advocating for Dreamers
Westminster College has joined more than 200 American higher education leaders of public and private universities and university systems, liberal arts colleges and community colleges across the United States as they launch the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. The alliance is a collective effort to improve how colleges and universities address immigration-related matters affecting their campuses.
Colleges and universities play an integral role in securing the nation’s wellbeing and prosperity through teaching, research, service and contributions to workforce and economic development. The new alliance will support adoption of best practices on campuses and work in a unified manner to communicate the need for federal and state policies that create a welcoming environment for immigrant, undocumented and international students.
"I am excited to join efforts with my colleagues across the country to advocate for our immigrant and international student populations through the Presidents' Alliance," said Westminster President Stephen Morgan. "I'm proud to be associated with higher education leaders who are looking out for all their students—whether they are first-generation or DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals/Dreamers). These Dreamers are some of our very best students, and I hope that our group can speak as one powerful voice to Congress to create policies that honor our values and commitments as educational institutions."
The Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration was created by a founding group of presidents who came together on Nov. 14, 2017, in Washington D.C. for a Presidents' Convening on Higher Education and Immigration. The convening was sponsored by George Washington University's Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute with the help of a presidential steering committee.
The alliance brings together American college and university chancellors and presidents dedicated to increasing public understanding of how immigration policies and practices impact our students, campuses and communities.
"We are a nation of immigrants and all our students — undocumented or not — are members of our communities and deserve dignity, respect and an opportunity to realize their full potential," Morgan added.
