Westminster Student Receives Newman Civic Fellows Award

Westminster Student Natalie Saavedra Receiving Newman Civic Fellows Award

May 4, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster College congratulates Natalie Saavedra for being named a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. The fellowship recognizes inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.

Westminster president Stephen Morgan nominated Saavedra for her leadership, mentoring and efforts on racial inequality faced by students on campus and in the surrounding community. She is a junior studying psychology with an emphasis in cognitive science.

Saavedra is president of Westminster Students Advocating for Youth, a club that pairs undergraduate students with junior high students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Those students are then helped with homework and understanding college access. They also receive personalized advice and support from a college student.

Saavedra also co-chairs the LatinX Club at Westminster, which aims to celebrate the various cultures of Latin America, bring awareness to social issues faced by the community and work with local schools to spread information about college access.

“I have always been interested in racial inequality, as it is something I am incredibly aware of as a Latina woman. Arriving at college has provided me with knowledge of the social systems in place that restrict certain individuals with marginalized identities, and has helped me realize the privileges I have that allow me to speak out against these issues,” said Saavedra.

As a Newman Civic Fellow, Saavedra will have access to training and resources to further her passions and develop strategies to achieve social change. Campus Compact provides learning opportunities focused on the skills fellows need in order to serve as effective agents of change in addressing public problems and building equitable communities.
