Westminster College Flight Team Earns Spot at Nationals

Oct. 20, 2014 Flight team places third overall in regional competition SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster College's Flight Team recently placed third in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Region I Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) competition. As a result, the team qualifies to compete in the National SAFECON competition at The Ohio State University in May 2015. The Region 1 SAFECON includes schools from Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. The competition was held October 14-18, at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and teams competed in a variety of flying and ground events such as short-field approach and landings, flight planning, computer accuracy, navigation, safety and aircraft recognition, and other several other events. This year, Westminster College was awarded the Red Baron Team Sportsmanship Award, and Sean Pursel was awarded the Outstanding Team Member Award. "All the students in our flying team have distinguished themselves as professionals willing to go the extra mile to serve the community through strength of character, leadership, constant improvement and achievement," said Bill Ogilvie, flight team advisor. "I would love to have more students with the high level of motivation I have found in this group." The Westminster College Flight Team includes flight students and instructors who devote many of their Saturdays to practicing for the NIFA competitions. Participation in NIFA promotes professionalism, exacting standards and friendly competition among student pilots. It also provides scholarship opportunities and recognition for the top flight students. This year's flight team includes: Connor Hennebry, Zachary McCoy, Stephen Hollis, Samual Giese, Issac McKnown, Samuel GieseCollin Fleck, Nicolle Huang, Paul Perthus, Samuel Davis, Robert Lindgren, Sean Pursel, Ian McCabe (coach) and Bill Ogilvie (advisor).
