487 freshmen to begin classes today
SALT LAKE CITY -
Westminster welcomes the Class of 2018 as 487 students begin their first day of classes today. Hailing from 13 countries and 33 states, this year's freshman class comes from as far as Mauritius to as close as Sandy, Utah.
"Westminster is delighted to welcome one of the brightest and most diverse classes in the history of the college," said John Baworowsky, Ph.D., vice president for enrollment and student success. "The class includes 15 valedictorians and includes the highest high school grade-point average in recent history. The 487 students in this class bring a diverse set of talents and interests to our campus. Westminster offers a personalized education in a very intimate campus environment. I am excited to see how these students will grow and develop over the next four years."
Among the reasons students cited for choosing to attend Westminster was its close campus feel and proximity to outdoor recreation.
"I toured a lot of campuses and I knew I wanted something small," said Mystery Post, a freshman from Clinton, Utah who plans to major in business management and English. "I loved the community here and the small campus feel-it's not overwhelming. I like that I can get to know my professors and other students better."
Out-of-state freshman Hannah Schulthess had been coming to Utah to ski for years and participated in the college's annual Helping Hands Day service project yesterday.
"Since I've been here, I really wanted the experience of giving back to the city I'm living in," said Schulthess, who grew up in Redwing, Minn. "I've always loved Salt Lake City, and I used to ski here. I love the mountains.the winters are much more mild than Minnesota."
