Westminster Student Eric Taylor Singing Opera on Stage

Feb 24, 2017

SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster College congratulates Eric Taylor for winning the Rocky Mountain Region Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition. The auditions are a nationwide competition beginning at the district level and culminating in the National Council Grand Finals Concert at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

Eric Taylor is a junior studying music in Westminster’s Florence J. Gillmor School of Music. The 22-year-old tenor is from St. George, Utah. His notable performances include singing Luis in “The Gondoliers” in 2015, Frederic in “The Pirates of Penzance” in 2014 with Utah Lyric Opera and singing with the Utah Opera Chorus in Tosca in 2016. A member of Westminster’s Opera Studio, Taylor has moved audiences with powerful performances as Fenton in “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and most recently as Rodolfo in “La Bohème.”

“I’m thrilled and excited for Eric to have this incredible opportunity,” said Michael Chipman, director of Westminster’s Studio Opera. “I’ve witnessed Eric develop his voice through diligent and focused work in just two years. It is rare to find a young tenor with his brilliant, ringing high notes that he can hold for days. Eric has immense potential to take one of the five finalist positions in New York.”

Competing in the national semi-final audition is prestigious but winning the national audition launches young opera artists into international careers. Eric Taylor will take the Met stage on March 12 for the semi-final audition. One week later, the finalists will perform two arias with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in the Grand Finals Concert.
