SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster College is recognized as one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible colleges in The Princeton Review’s 2019 “Guide to Green Colleges.” Westminster also recently earned a STARS “Silver” Rating for its continuing efforts in sustainability.

The schools in the “Guide to Green Colleges” were selected based on their academic offerings, campus policies, initiatives, activities and career preparation for students. Among 11,900 teens and parents The Princeton Review surveyed earlier this year for its 2019 “College Hopes & Worries Survey,” 64% said having information about a college’s commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the school.

“We know the college’s sustainability and environmental efforts are very important to our students,” said Kerry Case, director of Westminster’s Environmental Center. "Students are very involved in putting their good ideas into programs and initiatives that improve our campus."

Data collected to earn the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) classification was collected primarily by students – who are the driving force behind sustainability efforts at the college.

“At Westminster, we encourage students to accept responsibility for their learning, to discover and pursue their passions and to promote more equitable and sustainable communities,” Case said. “STARS has provided rich opportunities for student leadership in this area.”

Westminster’s Environmental Center leads the college’s STARS completion, which includes data for future improvement and reaffirming areas of strength. Westminster completes a STARS assessment every 2-3 years. Full STARS reports are available on the AASHE website.

“In contrast to many of my academic studies, which focused on more typical sustainability issues, working on STARS provided a different view and way to apply sustainability: it allowed me to reach many different parts of the campus community and to better understand the breadth of sustainability,” said a Westminster STARS alum in a survey.

Westminster repeatedly receives awards for its efforts in sustainability, including being the first institution in Utah to receive a Silver rating in 2011. The college has now received the silver rating four times.
