SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster celebrates this year’s Earth Day as an official Tree Campus USA® honoree for 2016–17. Selected by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management and engaging students and staff in conservation goals, Westminster is one of 296 campuses across the U.S. to earn the recognition.

The college will hold its annual Earth Day celebration on April 20 in the Richer Commons by announcing the tree campus recognition as well as host a variety of eco-friendly activities. The celebration will include a live band, a raptor show and electronic-waste recycling. Garden plant starts and honey from Westminster’s hive will be available.

Westminster College is known for its scenic campus and wide variety of trees, including many rare specimens and several species with wildlife benefits. Westminster earned the Tree Campus USA® title by meeting the Arbor Day Foundation’s five standards of having:

  1. a tree advisory committee
  2. a campus tree-care plan
  3. dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program
  4. an Arbor Day observance
  5. a student service-learning project

“Students and staff have been working toward the Tree Campus USA certification for years,” said Kerry Case, director of Westminster’s Environmental Center. “On the environmental front, we spend a lot of time addressing issues like waste and energy, and the importance of urban forestry can get overlooked. I am so glad to see this get the attention it deserves, and I’m proud of our students for making it happen.”

The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA® colleges and universities invested more than $46.7 million in campus forest management last year. More information about the program is available at arborday.org/TreeCampusUSA.
