Free Tax Help Reaches More Residents Through Community Partnerships
Jan 29, 2020
SALT LAKE CITY – Tax season for Westminster College accounting students is an opportunity to gain practical experience while serving the community. Westminster’s Tax Clinic sets up in the lobby of the Salt Lake County Government Center each year and offers free tax help to low-to-moderate income families. This is the sixth year Westminster has partnered with Salt Lake County – reaching more residents each tax season.
10,000 individuals and families served since 2015
$14 million+ in refunds
$3 million in refunds just last year
4 thousand community-service hours last year
Westminster’s Tax Clinic has expanded the number of people served by also partnering with Salt Lake Community College. SLCC students enrolled in ACCT 2570 are also providing free tax services to qualified individuals. Students are IRS-certified volunteers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Westminster’s VITA tax clinic provides free tax help to low-to-moderate income families, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing and electronically filing their own tax returns. The clinic also offers financial advocacy to assist individuals in achieving financial stability and self-sufficiency.
