Decorating tips from pastry chef Kaycie McDonald (@batterbowlcakes), the creator of the Converse gingerbread:

Creating Snow: When decorating a gingerbread house with royal icing, try piping on a generous amount of royal icing to desired areas. Dip fingertips into a cup of water and tap wet fingers on top of the icing to create a melted snow effect. When fingers begin to stick to the icing, dip again and continue to work. Add glitter or powdered sugar to the snow to increase the depth of effect.

Decorations: When decorating a house with candy, look for creative ways to incorporate candy into a realistic placement. Examples:

  • Green gumdrops for bushes
  • Jellybeans for rocks
  • M&Ms for holiday lights
  • Red Hots to line sidewalks

Creating Windows: Watering down royal icing to make a more transparent look is a great way to create windows on a ginger house. Paint royal icing windows with a paintbrush and allow time to dry. Outline windows with normal royal icing.

Landscaping: Don’t forget the landscaping! Get creative and have fun, use icing and candy to decorate. You can even use fondant and other cake decorating items to take your house to the next level. Pointed ice cream cones can be decorated with green icing in a star or leaf tip to make trees. Start by piping on the bottom ring and working up to the top, completing each row all the way around the cone before moving up to the next row.

Remember to have fun, get creative, and share your creations with the world.
