At Westminster, we know that having a safe and secure campus enhances the student experience and promotes security in the community. We have a security staff that provides around-the-clock patrol, 365 days a year, and conducts routine checks of all buildings, dorms, and parking lots. Campus Patrol also works closely with the Salt Lake City Police Department, employing several of their officers to assist on campus.

Prevention and awareness are a two of the best approaches to ensuring a safe campus. The key to staying safe is being aware of one’s surroundings, staying informed, and being involved in the community. We promote the "see something, say something" approach to community security, and it is crucial that members of the campus community stay alert, observant, and report anything that appears to be out of place.

To make a report or to request assistance, please call Campus Patrol at 801.832.2525 or 801.694.6176 or call the Salt Lake City Police at 801.799.3000. In case of emergencies, dial 911 immediately. If you have a hearing or speech impairment and need assistance, whether an emergency or not, you can text Campus Security at 801.694.6176. For emergencies, you can also text 911.

Safety Tips

The university makes every effort to keep our campus safe and to provide all students, employees, and guests with a positive experience while on the property. We encourage everyone to take safety seriously and do their part in staying vigilant and observant. Most crime is committed in response to an opportunity, so the best prevention is to eliminate the opportunity. The following are some tips and suggestions for staying safe.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Walk with a friend, in a group, or call 801.832.2525 or 801.694.6176 for a patrol escort.
  • Stay in well-lit and populated areas.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when to expect you.
  • Promptly report any suspicious activity or persons.
  • Avoid studying or working alone in a building at night.
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Take them with you or put them in the trunk to keep them out of sight.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Always make sure your vehicle is locked.
  • Do not leave your backpack, purse, phone or other items unattended.
  • If you are leaving a bike on campus, secure it with a U-lock and use the interior bike racks or the bike cage.
  • Keep purses, bags, and other valuables locked in a drawer or cabinet.
  • Never prop doors open, even for a short time.
  • Keep a record and photos of the serial numbers of your valuables (bikes, computers, etc.).
  • When entering a residence hall, be aware of anyone loitering in the area and attempting to enter the building behind you.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are locked before you leave or while you sleep.
  • Don’t prop your door open.
  • Make sure all visitors check in and have a resident with them.
  • Report any building safety issues to the RA or student services.
  • Get to know your neighbors and check in with them regularly.
  • Don’t allow strangers to enter your living area.
  • Keep emergency numbers stored in your phone.
  • Don’t have any open flames, including candles, incense, and smoking activities.
  • Know the location of fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations.

  1. Push the talk button.
  2. After a short delay, the phone will connect you to a Campus Patrol officer.
  3. An officer will see your location and respond immediately.

Emergency phones ring directly to Campus Patrol cell phones. Emergency phones are located in the following areas on Westminster's campus:

  • One in Nunemaker parking lot on the west side of Stock Hall
  • Three in Dumke parking lot (northeast corner, southeast corner, southwest corner)
  • One on the southwest corner of the Shaw Center

Campus surveillance cameras (Pelco IP) are strategically placed both indoors and out to help keep students, staff, and visitors cognizant of their surroundings. Visible cameras can help deter crime, and if a crime does occur, the presence of surveillance cameras can help identify criminals quickly.
