Coronavirus Update from Campus Safety

March 11, 2020

Dear Westminster Community,

The college is taking important action to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). While the college currently has NO COVID-19 cases, the safety and well-being of our students and campus community are of utmost importance. Please carefully review the following update so you know what the college is doing and what you need to do to protect our community.

We’re Open

Westminster is not closing campus at this time. The college is open, and classes will be conducted. Increased sanitation methods are being used with cleaning procedures recommended by the CDC. Westminster’s small class sizes and campus facilities allow the college to continue operations at this time. The Emergency Operations Team is closely monitoring the evolving outbreak, meeting regularly, and the Emergency Management Executive Team will make decisions about the status of campus.

Report Recent Travel

Any member of the Westminster community who recently travelled on a cruise or to a CDC level 2 or above country should call Utah’s coronavirus hotline 1.800.456.7707 for guidance. Current CDC level 2 and 3 travel advisories are for Japan, Italy, South Korea, Iran, and China. Students should report travel in those areas to Student Health Services before coming to campus. College employees should report to their direct supervisor before coming to campus (see detailed employee guidance).

Report Exposure, Call Ahead

Anyone returning from spring break who worries they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should call Utah’s coronavirus hotline 1.800.456.7707. Seek medical care and make sure to call ahead before arriving for care. Do not come to campus and avoid contact with others.

College faculty or staff should report potential exposure to their direct supervisor.

Students should potential exposure to Student Health Services at or 801.832.2239.

If you feel sick, stay home. Do not come to campus.

If you can't get back to Utah because of coronavirus travel restrictions, contact your supervisor or academic advisor.

Travel Restrictions

Westminster is cancelling all non-essential college travel, domestic and international, through the end of May Term, June 5. May Term Study Experiences and spring graduate trips are cancelled. The college knows the significant effect these cancelations have on our students and professors and is working through those impacts, such as arranging for alternative ways to fulfill course requirements. The Office for Global Engagement will be following up with more information for those directly affected by trip cancellations.

Student travel for domestic athletic competitions is being evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Athletic Director and President. Attendance at athletic events is being restricted per NCAA recommendations.

Any exceptions to business-related college travel, domestic or international, must be approved through your supervisor with approval at the cabinet level.

Campus Preparations

Westminster College has developed a set of recommendations to best ensure learning continuity for students in case individuals are unable to come to campus, or campus-based teaching is not recommended or possible. The college will remain flexible according to class need. See guidance to faculty for remote options.

In case there is an outbreak on-campus or in Utah, we encourage you take home course materials in order to complete the semester remotely if necessary.

Residential Students

If needed, the college has a quarantine plan for students living on campus. The quarantine plan includes on-campus housing spaces and food services.

Employees should work with their direct supervisor to assess individual working status. See guidance for employees.

Currently, scheduled public events will continue, though audiences will be limited to 50 through March 27. Social distancing is encouraged. Please see guidance for event organizers.

Utah currently has three confirmed cases of COVID-19. The state, Salt Lake County, and Salt Lake City have declared states of emergency to fund community preparedness. You’re encouraged to stay informed and follow guidance from public health agencies.

Westminster is continually assessing this evolving situation and will inform our community. New information will be emailed and updates will continue to be posted on Westminster's coronavirus webpage.
