From the President: Guidance for Staff Regarding Governor Gary Herbert's Stay Safe, Stay Home Directive
March 29, 2020
Dear Westminster Faculty and Staff,
Last Friday, Governor Gary Herbert issued a "Stay Safe, Stay Home" directive for the State of Utah, expiring on April 13. This news was followed by a statement of support and enforcement from Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall.
Before the latest directive was issued, Julie Freestone sent comprehensive instructions for Westminster employees that anticipate and accommodate the governor's action. Although we can't replicate your college offices and workspaces in your homes, we will continue to work with you to identify possible remote work options. The college remains open to serve residential students who are still on campus, sustain and secure our facilities, and conduct business necessary for continued operations. Please see Julie's instructions regarding remote work ("telework") and talk with your supervisor to determine the extent to which working from home is feasible for you, if you haven't done so already.
For individuals who need to be on campus, travel to work is allowed under the state directive and Salt Lake City order. In-person meetings can be conducted amongst individuals on campus, as long as we observe the guidelines articulated both for Westminster and the State: e.g., appropriate social distance and hygiene, group gatherings of fewer than 10 people, and self-isolation or quarantine when necessary.
I wouldn't be surprised if some faculty and staff would like to be on campus even if working from home is possible. Competition for time, space, and internet bandwidth at home may be intensifying as the days and weeks wear on, and losing the community experience of coming to work can be draining to the spirit even as we improve our virtual engagement. This is the time for patience and grace as we all work to stay healthy and safe.
