Spring is in the air, and with it comes unpredictable weather!

Clothing

Check the weather when getting ready for the day. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather and carry an umbrella if rain or snow is predicted. Additionally, wearing layers can help you stay comfortable as weather and temperature may change significantly during the day.

Traveling and Walking

Use caution when walking on wet surfaces and wipe your feet when entering buildings to minimize the amount of water in entrance areas.

Avoid traveling during periods of severe weather. And, to be prepared in case you run into severe weather or have to travel during it otherwise, make sure you have an emergency supply kit in the car and keep your cell phone close by.

Space Heaters

Remember that space heaters are not allowed in any residence halls—use other means to stay warm indoors, such as layers of clothing and blankets.

When weather conditions are favorable, riding a scooter or bicycle is a great environmentally-friendly way to get around. Some tips to keep in mind to stay safe while enjoying the ride include:

  • Remember that electrically-powered scooters and bicycles are not allowed for on-campus transportation.
  • Electrically-powered scooters and bicycles may not be taken inside any campus building.
  • Always yield to pedestrians, especially on sidewalks and bridges.
  • Park bicycles in racks and scooters off of walkways and away from building entrances and exits.
  • Obey all traffic laws and be aware of road conditions and obstructions.
  • Pay attention to weather and road conditions.
  • Practice distraction-free riding, using both hands and keeping your phone safely stowed away.
  • While Salt Lake City does not require the use of helmets while riding scooters or bicycles, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended and could help to prevent serious head injury or death in the event of an accident.
  • Remember that pedestrians, scooter riders, and bicycle riders become less visible to vehicle drivers after dark. Plan your trips to occur during daylight hours as much as possible and wear high-visibility clothing if you have to ride at night.
