Westminster PEER Team

The PEER (Peer Empowerment and Education Resource) Team includes undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines who are passionate about preventing and ending sexual and interpersonal violence. These peer educators hold bystander intervention training and healthy relationship workshops for fellow Westminster students and local high schools. In addition, they plan and carry out comprehensive prevention campaigns regarding consent and healthy relationships.

Beginning in spring 2019, prospective peer educators will have the opportunity to receive academic credit by taking the course Peer Education in Practice (EDUC 300P). During the course, students will learn peer education skills, gain a deeper understanding of sexual and interpersonal violence and diversity and inclusion, practice presenting trainings, and plan prevention campaigns.

Bystander Intervention Training

Each year, hundreds of students at Westminster receive bystander intervention training from members of the PEER Team. At fall orientation, new undergraduate students learn about barriers to intervention and practice four strategies for interrupting sexual or interpersonal violence: direct, distract, delegate, and delay. Club members, student athletes, ASW leadership, and other groups across campus participate in an advanced bystander intervention training that addresses gender norms, implicit/unconscious bias, diversity and inclusion, and the impact of leadership styles on bystander behavior.

Healthy Relationship Workshop

Members of the PEER Team also facilitate the Escalation Workshop, focused on healthy relationships. Student participants watch a film depicting the development of an unhealthy relationship and discuss healthy and unhealthy behaviors in relationships, warning signs, and intervention opportunities. The Escalation Workshop is available upon request.

Title IX Training

Westminster has a robust primary prevention and ongoing training program with the goal of eliminating sexual and interpersonal violence and providing optimal support in response to it. Students receive in-person and online training regarding Title IX policy and procedures, prohibited conduct, consent, reporting, investigations, available resources, and supportive measures. All employees are required to complete training on prohibited conduct, appropriate responses to disclosures, their reporting responsibilities, and resources. Staff and faculty involved with Title IX issues receive additional training on conducting investigations and appeals, providing a trauma-informed response and investigation, and administering the Title IX program in accordance with laws and best practices.
