The Latin Program at Westminster University

Once the language of the ancient Roman Empire, the common tongue of the Medieval West, and the way to communicate in academic settings through the seventeenth century, Latin is a classical language whose influence is still surfaces in many parts of our modern world. Latin roots constitute the foundation of many English words, and studying them is known to improve vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to learn new romance languages. In fact, anyone interested in writing, teaching, editing, law, or other careers that depend on a solid understanding of the building blocks of language should take Latin. It has been used throughout the Western world in fields like humanities, computer science, medicine, law, literature, and education.

In Latin courses. students research how the language influences their field of interest. Westminster encourages students to take Latin classes, not only because of their great practical advantages, but also because Latin is the gateway to a deeper understanding of history and culture.
