About Heidi Van Ert
Dr. Heidi Van Ert is the instructor of the Creative Arts Methods course and supervisor of student teachers at Westminster College. She also works with students on portfolio development. Dr. Van Ert holds a PhD from the University of Utah in the area of Special Education, with an emphasis in Gifted Education. She also has a Masters degree in the field of Art Therapy.
Prior to coming to Westminster College, Dr. Van Ert was a classroom teacher in the Salt Lake City School District and a clinical faculty member at the University of Utah where she taught courses in Special Education and supervised graduate students who were obtaining their Gifted/Talented Endorsements.
In 1992 - 1993, Dr. Van Ert received a leadership training grant from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Utah. She has worked as an art instructor and as an art therapist in a variety of settings. She is also a professional watercolor artist.
Dr. Van Ert's relevant publications include "Distance Training in Gifted/Talented Education: Description of a Collaborative Working Mode" in Rural Special Education Quarterly (1996); and "Developing Visual Literacy Among Academically Able Fifth-Grade Students" in Roeper Review, (1989). In May 1994 Dr. Van Ert presented "The Benefits of Art Therapy" for the Community Hospice program in Salt Lake City, Utah. In August 1993 she presented "Enhancing Emotional Development Through Art and Imagery With Gifted Students" at the Tenth World Congress of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children in Toronto, Canada. In November 1992 Dr. Van Ert presented "Using Art to Enhance Self-Esteem" at the annual conference of National Association for Gifted Children in Los Angeles, California.
