General Counsel's Corner

The simple definition of a general counsel is the main lawyer who gives legal advice to a company, government agency, school, or business.  In higher education, a general counsel is responsible for all of the legal work arising from the activities of the college or university’s faculties and departments.

On November 18, 2013 I began my tenure as the General Counsel for Westminster College. As General counsel, my mission is to render timely and thoughtful advice on the broad range of legal issues that the college, its faculty, and administrators confront on behalf of Westminster.

With regards to the students of Westminster College, my mission is to provide a resource where they can learn legal principles that will assist them in their studies and prepare them for the global workplace.

I have always believed in a preventative approach to the law.  Benjamin Franklin said: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” (circa 1736).  This is the lens under which I view the practice of law.  I believe educating non-lawyers on the legal landmines associated with all aspects of education, employment, and business will prevent costly and emotionally draining litigation.

In the spirit of prevention, I am launching this monthly newsletter.  Each month I will focus on one or two current legal issues in the hopes of providing a resource to the Westminster community.
