About
James "Cid" Seidelman, PhD James "Cid" Seidelman, PhD, is Distinguished Service Professor and Professor of Economics at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. He returned to teaching in fall 2015 after serving 11 years as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Westminster. During his tenure as Provost, he coordinated the full range of opportunities for student learning and provided leadership for the School of Arts and Sciences, Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business, School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and School of Education. Other educational resources he managed included student development (residential and student life, student services, and intercollegiate athletics) and information resources (academic and administrative computing, library, and institutional research). In addition, he provided ongoing support and assistance to Westminster's advancement and fundraising efforts, and coordinated the college's Strategic Ventures Committee and the identification and evaluation of new revenue opportunities. Other responsibilities included providing key leadership in facilitating Westminster's paradigm shift from a teaching-centered to a learning-centered institution, the implementation and tracking of the college's strategic plan, the annual development of institutional priorities and working closely with the senior leadership team, deans and associate provosts to facilitate an open, inclusive, innovative and collaborative campus culture. Known as a strategic thinker and consensus builder, Dr. Seidelman has gained the respect and trust of colleagues at Westminster and across the many communities, his work has traversed. Beginning his career at Westminster in 1980 as an Assistant Professor of Economics, Dr. Seidelman became Director of the Economics Program in 1981, and was later appointed as Director of the MBA Program where he guided the graduate program through a critical change from a Master of Management to a Master of Business Administration format. He became Dean of the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business in 1990 and reorganized the school into a team-based approach to curricular development and assessment. During his 13 years as Dean, Dr. Seidelman initiated several new academic programs, built new networks of funding support and led the school through professional accreditation. He also coordinated the planning and fundraising of an $8 million expansion to the business building creating the Gore Center for Business, Aviation, and Entrepreneurship. Additional accomplishments include the planning, fundraising and implementation of the college's $7.4 million Flight Operations Center. Dr. Seidelman currently serves as Chair of the Central Board of Intermountain Healthcare and as a board member of the Arnold Machinery Company. He was formerly the board chair and lead director of CIT Bank and a Commissioner and Chair of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Other board assignments have included the Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions, the Utah Foundation, the Utah Technology Council, the Utah Information Technology Council, and the Bonneville Resource Conservation and Development Council. He has also played leadership roles with the Competency-Based Education Network, and the New American Colleges and Universities Consortium. In addition to a number of consulting, accreditation and expert witness engagements, Dr. Seidelman's academic research has focused on international trade issues, trade agreements, higher education innovation, for-profit education, and competency-based education. Dr. Seidelman is a native of Illinois, and received a bachelors degree in economics from Eastern Illinois University and moved to Utah to complete his PhD in economics at the University of Utah. He resides in Park City, Utah with his spouse and partner Jeanette and has two grown daughters, Lauren and Anna.
