Prior Learning Assessment

Westminster College is the only institution in Utah that offers a Prior Learning Assessment opportunity, giving you the ability to receive academic credit for the professional work experience you already have.

By demonstrating your knowledge of general business through Prior Learning Assessment, you avoid taking classes to learn material in the Bachelor of Business Administration program that you are already familiar with, saving you time and money.

Prior experience eligible to be considered for the assessment includes:

  • Certifications
  • Credentials
  • Military experience
  • Professional work experience

If you are a transfer student, you can combine credits earned through this assessment with any credits you transferred from another institution to Westminster.

How it Works

Step 1

You are encouraged to peruse the assessment during your second semester in the Bachelor of Business Administration program so that you can get a feel for the writing standards required to be successful in the assessment.

You will complete a pre-assessment that is used to identify projects that you have a high likelihood of successfully completing through the assessment.

Step 2

You will demonstrate your knowledge of a subject through specific materials (including presentations academic papers, spreadsheets, videos, etc.). You will also be required to produce a cover letter, addressing the rubrics of projects you are seeking credit for, explaining how the materials you submitted meet the learning goals (competencies) of them.

Step 3

Faculty members will assess your submitted portfolio to determine if your experience meets the learning goals (competencies) of a project and if credit will be awarded.

Cost

There is an assessment fee of $500. After the assessment, you will pay $50 for each credit awarded to you. A maximum of 45 credits can be earned.

To save money through the assessment, you must earn at least 1 credit. The combined assessment fee and charge for 1 credit earned is $550, totaling less than the current per credit hour tuition and fees for the program. And, the more credits you earn through the assessment, the more money you save. For example, if you earned 10 credits through the assessment you would pay $1,000 total for the assessment and your earned credits, whereas, if you were paying the current tuition and fees for the program, that amount would increase greatly, costing you thousands extra depending on current program pricing. And, you may end up taking and paying for courses whose content you are already familiar with.
