Senior Artist: Brian Jorgensen
Meet the Artist
I am currently exploring strangeness and isolation through the language of starkness
and otherworldliness. In so doing, I look to invoke a sense of mood. And while that
mood is often serious or contemplative, it is usually not hopeless or joyless. At
times, it may even be a bit playful.
Perhaps the most mysterious of places is outer space, little traveled to by humans,
but frequently dreamed about. Despite being seen as cold and vast and lonely, the
heavens are also viewed as the locus of the divine, as a place to maybe, just possibly,
learn who we are and why we are. In the meantime, we remain here, on this spinning
orb that can be both wonderfully embracing and brutally harsh.
I often seek to accentuate the emotional impact of these ideas through a limited color
palette. The worlds I create may be vibrant but they are not showy. Sometimes the
colors I choose are complementary and sometimes contrasting, but my ultimate goal
is harmony, rather than tension. While most of my work is representational, I also
employ abstraction to try to reach about and into my subjects. What does a particular
place or mindset feel like? What is the significance of this individual experiencing
this moment in this setting? The purpose of my work is not to answer but to question.
