Women in Aviation International is an organization that supports women within the field of aviation or who are pursuing it. The Women in Aviation Great Salt Lake Chapter is an extension of this organization with the same motivation.
We want to provide opportunities for young women interested in aviation and to provide information about what they can do. It is a growing field, especially for women, and we want to make sure that every women has a chance to be involved in aviation.
We are one of the over 90 chapters world-wide. We are all about networking with our local and global communities to build lasting friendships and gain valuable advice through a variety of volunteering opportunities and member events that run all year long. This year we held the first ever Girls in Aviation day event, which we received a declaration from Governor Herbert. We had many participants including Air Traffic Control (SLC), SkyWest Airlines, the U.S. Air Force, and many more.
The Women in Aviation Great Salt Lake Chapter supports Women in Aviation International’s mission, which is:

Our 12,000+ membership includes astronauts, corporate pilots, maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, business owners, educators, journalists, flight attendants, high school and university students, air show performers, airport managers and many others.
We provide year-round resources to assist women in aviation and to encourage young women to consider aviation as a career. WAI also offers educational outreach programs to educators, aviation industry members and young people nationally and internationally. Our most recent initiative is our Girls in Aviation Day program for girls ages 8–16.
In addition, WAI promotes public understanding of the accomplishments and contributions of women in aviation. This includes historic notables such as Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman, Eileen Collins, Jeana Yeager, Nicole Malachowski and many others. We recognize these women through our WAI Pioneer Hall of Fame program.

Women in Aviation International began in 1990 and was established in 1994 as a nonprofit organization. The Women in Aviation Great Salt Lake Chapter was founded in 2009.
The Great Salt Lake Chapter’s first event was held on September 26, 2015, and was called, “Girls in Aviation Day”. Their event resulted in the governor of Utah, Gary Herbert, to declare September 26, 2015 as Young Women in Aviation Day in Utah in honor of the event.
A section of the declaration read:
Women in Aviation International declared September 26, 2015 National Girls in Aviation Day, and Governor Gary R. Herbert has issued a supporting declaration for Utah. The designation calls all Americans to recognize the importance of inspiring and encouraging young women in aerospace education and careers. In conjunction with nationwide celebrations, Utah will host its own event at the Salt Lake International Airport.
