Dr. Mark Rubinfeld
Dr. Mark Rubinfeld has been at Westminster 11 years, moving from New Orleans to Salt Lake City in 2003. The chair of the sociology department says the opportunity to do just that and mold a department is what brought him to the college. He also says the aspects that attract students also attracted him to Westminster. “Small classes, a close knit community where students and professors are on a first name basis, that’s why I wanted to work here.” Rubinfeld also says his sense of adventure brought him to Salt Lake. “I had never lived west of the Mississippi and thought it would be a great change of pace. Plus, I saw that Salt Lake was ranked as one of the top cities to live, so that made the decision and the move less scary.”
Mark continues to give presentations at sociological conferences, write peer reviews, and when he isn’t being quoted in the New York Times on the newest popular culture trends, he continues work on a book of that very subject. For all that he has accomplished, Mark says his greatest success is growing and developing the sociology department, seeing how the program he and his colleagues have created leads to the success of his students. “I love reconnecting with former students and seeing where they are and the great things they are doing in life.” His advice for former students and alumni? “Always be critically aware of what is going on in the world. We all have to make a living, but most importantly, do things that are meaningful to your life.”
