SALT LAKE CITY -
Westminster College is pleased to announce Robert Redford as the 2013 Commencement speaker. The ceremony will be held June 1, 2013, 1:45 p.m. at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, UT.
Redford will speak to more than 900 graduating seniors during commencement. The actor, director, and producer is also the founder/president of the Sundance Institute, based in Utah. Known for his roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Horse Whisperer, and many others, Redford is also recognized for his support of engaged storytelling through the Sundance Film Festival and Sundance Institute. As an environmentalist, Redford is a tireless activist who has earned numerous awards for his conservation efforts.
"Westminster is excited to welcome a commencement speaker with a passion for broadening the creative mind, provoking thought, and encouraging social responsibility," said Westminster president, Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich. "Our graduating seniors are prepared to take on lives of success and meaning. They have mastered a demanding curriculum, grounded in the liberal arts and exploring one or more disciplines in depth, often through original research. They can think critically and communicate effectively. More importantly, they will be lifelong learners, quick to adapt to changes in their lives and in their environment. They have demonstrated social responsibility through their service to the community and their commitment to the environment. Robert Redford's passionate commitment to social justice will be an exciting model for our graduates."
