Understanding Financial Aid and FAFSA

Get More Money You Don’t Need to Pay Back

Even if you don’t think you qualify for federal student aid, you should still submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Westminster uses that information to consider you for grant money from Westminster.

You should also apply for scholarships. In addition to the Westminster merit-based scholarships and awards that you are automatically considered for upon applying for admission, Westminster offers scholarships in athletics, performing arts, and Honors. There are also many scholarships offered by other organizations that you can use toward your Westminster education.

Avoid Taking Out Too Many Loans

When you fill out the FAFSA, you will receive an offer that may include grants and loans. This offer shows you your options; you are not obligated to use any amount of it. You can choose to reject or accept any amount of that offer. Make sure to explore all financial aid opportunities available to you that help make a private college education an affordable option. Westminster’s dedicated team of financial aid counselors are available to confidentially discuss all of your questions about paying for college.

Take Advantage of Other Resources

Taking advantage of on-campus student employment may be a great way to help pay for some of your educational expenses. Westminster invested $1.2 million (including Federal Work-Study) into student employment opportunities across campus during the 2020–21 academic year. Students work as research assistants, athletic trainers, writing tutors, theatre technicians, and more (some on-campus jobs may be open only to students awarded Federal Work-Study). You can also utilize the Career Center to find competitive jobs and internships off campus.
