Hear & Now Commission for Emerging BIPOC Composers
Westminster College and the Westminster Concert Series are thrilled to announce the selection of Kennedy Taylor Dixon as the inaugural Hear & Now commissioned composer.
The Hear & Now commission award’s goal is to amplify the extraordinary voices of BIPOC composers and create a space for new compositional perspectives to interact with Westminster's students, performance faculty, and Salt Lake City’s vibrant arts community. The award is a $3,000 commissioning prize, travel, and accommodations for a week-long residency at Westminster (April 3–10, 2023) and the world premiere performance of Kennedy's work on April 10, 2023, at 7:30 p.m.
After 2 rounds of individual listening and scoring of 45 submissions from around the world, the selection committee was impressed by the originality of Kennedy's graphic scores, her willingness to engage with performers in a collaborative process, and the visceral beauty of her music. Kennedy will be in residence at Westminster the week before the performance, working with students and faculty members. Kennedy writes about this commission, "Creating a personal bond with my performers is always my preference, and I want them to know that there isn't a barrier between us. Ideally, the end product of this project is a piece that all parties feel supported and heard in."
A special thanks to our selection committee Devin Maxwell, Inés Thiebaut, and Anthony R. Green, and to the Salt Lake Arts Council for support of this program through the Racial, Equity, and Inclusion Grant.
