SALT LAKE CITY—Westminster College will add two new majors and one new minor to its curriculum beginning fall of 2017. The college’s Board of Trustees approved the Outdoor Education and Leadership major, and a Sports Management major and minor.

The two distinct programs tap into growing opportunities in Utah’s urban and wild settings. The new majors give Westminster students the chance to incorporate their passions into their studies and careers.

Outdoor Education and Leadership Major

Challenging classes, combined with unparalleled access to wild and untrammeled places, provide countless opportunities for leadership experience, professional training and personal adventures in Westminster’s Outdoor Education and Leadership program. Westminster’s outdoor programming provides a sense of community and a foundation for academic achievement. This new major in Outdoor Education and Leadership was created after sustained popularity of Westminster’s Outdoor Education and Leadership minor (42 students declared minors in 2016) and because of the success of the co-curricular outdoor program on campus.

Graduates from the minor are working in land management, the recreation industry, advocacy and outdoor retailing. Others have created their own foundations or companies.

“I’ve applied my degree beyond professional skiing to produce inspiring content for companies in the outdoor industry through writing and videos in addition to hosting women’s skills clinics and guiding wilderness trips,” said alum Amy David. “Earning this degree at Westminster was one of the most beneficial decisions I’ve made as a young adult.”

Students will work closely with a faculty mentor to find opportunities outside of the classroom and participate in internships with some of the many businesses that make up Salt Lake City’s thriving outdoor industry. The best part? Utah’s red rock canyons, wild rivers and snowy slopes are both their playground and their laboratory. The major includes an immersion semester of backcountry travel through the Intermountain West and the Colorado plateau.

“The skills students gain in settings with tangible consequences can be easily transferred into many other environments,” said Tiana White, director of outdoor programs at Westminster. “By combining field study with rigorous classroom work, we created an exciting major that prepares students for a meaningful career and enriches their time at Westminster.”

Sports Management Major and Minor

Triumph over challenges and a collective cheering section make sports a passionate realm of athletes and fans. Sports organizations at every level—professional, collegiate, high school, youth and recreational—are seeking skilled leaders and managers in the high-stakes industry.

In the new Sports Management major and minor, students develop effective leadership, management and administrative skills specific to the sports industry. The new offering is the only program in Utah to offer both a major and minor option in sports management.
Sports management students can pursue either a business track or an athletics track. The program has flexible scheduling that allows students to tailor their studies towards their chosen career path and around their passions. Westminster’s urban location provides inside access to a wide variety of sports organizations who call Salt Lake City home, including U.S. teams, college teams and Olympic organizations.
“Westminster’s sports management program is ideal for driven and focused students who want to get involved in athletics behind the scenes,” said Sara Beaudry, program director. “Our strong focus on business management molds students into strong, capable leaders.”
