About the Psychology Program
The psychology department is committed to facilitating an educational environment that promotes scientific inquiry, critical thinking, ethical responsibility, personal and professional development, multicultural awareness, and inclusiveness. Our curriculum provides students with the foundations of psychology while allowing them the flexibility to explore their personal interests. Our students graduate with an informed and respectful understanding of the experiences of diverse groups and their perspectives.
Psychology Sub-fields Offered
This branch of psychology focuses on the differences between normal and abnormal behavior. Clinical and counseling psychology is devoted to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with difficulties in cognition, emotion, and conduct. Classes in this emphasis will include abnormal psychology, methods of counseling, and exploring addictions.
Developmental psychology is the study of how people change across multiple psychological domains from infancy throughout their lifespan. Classes in this area include child development, adolescent development, lifespan development, and special-topics courses.
The study of social, emotional, and cognitive processes involved in learning. Educational psychology uses research to facilitate the understanding of how different groups of people learn. Classes offered by our program include topics pertaining to learning, memory, and motivation.
Social psychology is the scientific study of how individuals perceive, influence, and relate to others. This sub-field takes an interactive approach to human behavior and examines how both international and external factors shape social conduct. Classes in this area include personality theories, sources of social influence, and multicultural psychology.
Psychology Club
Are you looking for a way to be connected to fellow students who are also interested in the behavioral and neural sciences? All Westminster students interested in psychology can join the Psychology Club. We host events on different psychology topics each year and participate in meaningful service projects that benefit surrounding communities.
Psi Chi Honor Society
Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology chapter at Westminster University. We seek to promote the science and application of psychology through monthly meetings, community service, and academic excellence. Students are required to be in the upper 35 percent of their class to be eligible for membership.
