About
Janet Reyes is a proud Mexican immigrant woman, a first-generation college graduate and has English as her second language. She was born in Fairfield, California but raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. When she was 15 years old, she and her family left their beautiful home country, in hopes of a better future in the United States. However, when she arrived to Utah, her life was not easy. She did not know any English and did not have a house. She and her family were living in her uncle's basement. While attending high school, she faced discrimination from teachers and students because of her culture, race, and accent. Despite encountering discrimination, she never gave up and fought for her dreams in life. She graduated from Kearns High School in 2018. After that, she continued her education at Salt Lake Community College and graduated with an Associate of Science in Psychology in 2019. Then, she transferred to the University of Utah and graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor's in Psychology, a minor in Sociology and a Certificate in Positive Psychology. Subsequently, she received her Master's of Education from the University of Utah this past May 2023. Janet’s professional goal and life passion is to empower, mentor, advocate, support, and motivate college students. She loves helping each of her students navigate higher education, connecting them to the right campus resources, and developing programs, workshops, and events that see students holistically. Janet has a strong commitment to creating equitable, inclusive, and safe spaces where all students can thrive while honoring and embracing their authentic selves.
Interests
Some of her hobbies include dancing Latin music such as Cumbia, Merengue, Salsa, and
Bachata, hiking, practicing meditation, working out, reading, listening to podcasts,
and spending time with her family and friends. Interesting fact about her: She is
a Boba lover!
